Researchers already know what lifestyle choices lead to long and healthy lives. They’ve traveled from Costa Rica to California, to Italy and Japan to find pockets of people who are more likely to live to be 100-years-old. The results:
- Move naturally (walk and stand more, sit on the ground more, use chairs less)
- Eat until you’re 80% full, with plenty of plants
- Develop a sense of purpose
- Belong to a community
Heavy squatting wasn’t necessary. Running sprint intervals wasn’t necessary. Plyometrics weren’t necessary. Sitting on the ground doing ab exercises wasn’t necessary. They’re fine if you enjoy them, but they’re not necessary when health is the goal.
If you want to run marathons, do triathlons, or play in another league when you graduate, keep training like an athlete.
If you want to be healthy, maybe just go for a walk.
