When not to lose weight

During your sports season.

Losing weight during your season inevitably leads to muscle loss, which leads to decreased performance and increased risk of injury. The number on the scale may be going down, but so are your capabilities.

That said, the composition of muscle and body fat may change for the better: muscle increases and body fat decreases, but the number on the scale should stay the same. There’s only one way to know what’s happening: measure it.

There is a Bod Pod in the basement of the Science Center that will give you accurate readings for muscle mass and body fat percentage. Use it as frequently as possible to know how much muscle you have throughout your season. Email Dr. Todd Backes to get started: backes@fredonia.edu.

If muscle mass is going down over the course of your season, quite simply, you need to eat more food.
