When I first heard about Facebook

I was a college freshman in 2005 when a friend told me about Facebook: “It’s a place where you tell people about yourself and show them your pictures.” I vividly remember my response: “Why would I want to see other peoples’ pictures?”

That might sound unkind, but I was quite serious. I still am.

By now we take it for granted that we want to see what’s going on in other peoples’ lives. We forget to ask ourselves, “Should I want to see what’s going on in other peoples’ lives?”

Today, even Mark Zuckerberg has to take measures to guard himself against the addictive qualities of social media.
