Ripped jeans

I suspect these are the thoughts that went through the head of the person who decided to make factory-ripped jeans:

“Boy, that person with ripped jeans looks really cool. She seems so authentic. She’s so comfortable with herself that she can walk around in jeans with holes in them. I wish I were that cool. I wish I had the confidence to show my flaws like that. But I don’t want people to think I can’t afford new jeans. I don’t want people to think I’m poor. Maybe if I purposely put holes in my jeans–so that people know I’m not poor–I, too, can feel cool and authentic.”

Of course, that logic just doesn’t work, because you can’t buy something to make you feel more free.

Freedom comes from accepting what you already have.
