Yesterday our women’s volleyball team lost to Brockport, a team that’s won SUNYAC Championships each of the last three years. We lost in five sets, by a single point.

At the end of each season, San Antonio Spurs head coach Greg Popovich individually thanks each of his players for the opportunity to coach them. In 22 years he’s won 5 NBA Championships, meaning he’s given those thank-yous after a devastating loss 17 times.

I’m not saying that gratitude ought to replace ambition, or mourning after a loss. I’m saying that gratitude is a critical, usually missing piece of the picture.
