Social media is not for you; it’s for advertisers.

You are not the user of social media; you are the product. Advertisers are the users of social media, the ones paying a hefty fee for your attention.

Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat do not care about you; they care about your data. They sell your data to advertisers for a profit.

Once you see the business model it’s hard to unsee. The platforms are not a problem in and of themselves, but the business model is one of the most glaring problems of the 21st Century. It’s worth asking yourself, “Can I ethically use social media as it’s currently structured?”

And it’s worth asking yourself: “Why am I using social media?” For status? Connection? Happiness?

And if those are your answers, is social media really giving you the results you seek?
