Sucking up to your coach

There’s nothing wrong with trying to make a good impression on your coach. Everyone likes being liked.

The problem is that, on your quest for ever-more status, you act differently in front of different people. Why treat the freshmen with respect if it’s not going to immediately benefit you?

This comes back to bite you, often in ways you don’t expect and never notice: The job you don’t get, the promotion that goes to someone else, the party invitation you never receive.

You might find someone you trust, someone who will tell you hard truths, and ask, “What do people think of me?”
