“How do we win more games?”

I’m afraid to say that I spend little time asking myself this question.

Rather, I ask, “How do we create an experience that aligns with what our student-athletes are seeking and prepares them to be successful after they graduate?”

If the student-athlete’s first concern is to win more games then that’s the experience we should optimize for, but more often than not winning is their fourth, fifth, or sixth-most important concern. You find this out when you talk to them.

The first question is narrow, stressful, and self-centered.

The second question is limitless, creative, and student-athlete-centered.
